Just a simple car trip from Rome is one of the most under appreciated sites in all of Italy: Ostia, located at the mouth of the Tiber River.
After the fall of Rome, Ostia, which had previously served as a naval base, was abandoned. Mud and sand buried its contents, protecting them from the damage of time and leaving us with impressive remains of shops, warehouses, temples and baths revealing the lifestyle of ancient Ostia’s inhabitants. These powerful ruins rival those of Pompeii and this tour makes an excellent alternative if you are unable to make it both places.
Led by one of our expert guides, this private tour begins at the “Porta Romana” gate and continues along the the main road, that crosses the city from north to south, “decumanus maximum”. One of the highlights here is the amphitheatre, an arena which holds crowds of thousands and today hosts works from ancient authors and contemporary music concerts. Following the ruins, we will stop for a relaxing seaside lunch. Alternatively, you may choose to continue on with the tour, in which case, you could visit a modern Facist neighborhood of the EUR district, or stay in the past and continue on along the Ancient Appian Way.
We will work with you to create your ideal itinerary and happily arrange a chauffeured sedan to escort you and your guide.
