If you are looking for the honest and endless heartbeat of Italy, than this tour is for you.
Just an hour outside of Rome is a region called Ciociaria that is away from the throngs of tourists but also offers everything from nature and mountains, to superb food and villages rich in history and art.
Located southeast of Rome, this territory is layered with possibilites for the traveler looking for ‘off the beaten path’ experiences. Your full day itinerary begins as you are escorted to this area by your private driver and expert guide. The first stop is the town of Anagni, the historical center of Ciociaria. Also known as the city of Popes, Anagni is rich in legend, history and tradition.
During the 13th century, Anagni gave four popes to the Catholic Church over the course of one hundred years. Today, it appears as a small medieval town with winding streets set within strong Roman walls. The frequent presence of popes in Anagni explains why its cathedral became a place of important historical events. Your expert guide will then lead you on a tour of the famous crypt inside the church, known to be one of the most beautiful in Italy. The bright-hued frescoes that cover the walls and ceiling are some of the finest works of Romanesque and Byzantine Art, and the unrestored cosmatesque floor is still in excellent condition.
Then it’s wheels up for the remarkable town of Fumone. Beautifully preserved, Fumone is located high up on a hill and the castle was considered a vital lookout post during ancient times. Elevated 800 meters above sea level, it is in a position of great strategic importance and geographical prominence over the entire Sacco valley including the main road connecting Rome and Naples: Via Latina. The name “Fumone” is derived from the ancient technique of communicating using smoke signals. Eventually Fumone’s role shifted to being closely linked to the Roman Catholic Church. One of the most notable episodes in its history came when Pope Celestine V was killed inside the town’s famous castle.
The undeniable highlight of this tour is the guided visit to the stunning castle with its gigantic pensile, or roof garden, which is the highest in Europe. Witness the majestic view from the top as you look out onto the countryside. They say on a clear day, you can see as far as the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Of course we can’t forget lunch! A typical Ciociaria meal will be arranged at a local trattoria or restaurant depending on your culinary interests and flow of the itinerary.
As you can see this tour has it all. From beautiful landscapes, art and architecture, to powerful history, incredible views, and delicious food and wine, Ciociaria is not to be missed.
